Proposes that human needs form a rough hierarchy - physiological, safety, love, esteem, self-actualisation - in which lower needs generally have to be reasonably satisfied before higher ones become motivating, the founding statement of humanistic psychology's alternative to psychoanalysis and behaviourism.
