What we store, and what we don't

Reading the index needs no account, no cookie banner and no tracking. This page describes exactly what is stored, why, and who else can see it.

Reading the index

You can browse every domain, field, topic and work without an account. Doing so sets no advertising or analytics cookies, and we do not build a profile of what you read.

Our hosting provider processes ordinary web server logs — IP address, user agent, requested page — to serve the site and defend it from abuse. We do not use those logs to identify individual readers.

Things kept in your browser

Some features remember state locally. This data lives in your browser's own storage, is not an identifier we can link to you, and clearing your browser data removes it:

  • Your theme choice — whether you picked light or dark.

Accounts and payments

The site currently has no accounts and takes no payments, so there is nothing of that kind to store. If that changes, this page will be updated before the feature goes live.

Links to other sites

Sherlock is a catalogue. Following an entry takes you to a publisher, journal or archive that we do not control, and their privacy practices are their own.

Changes

If this page changes materially, the date at the top changes with it.
